Postponed the run this morning to 11:30 to avoid the worst of the bitter cold.  Andrea, Allie, Colin, Jake and Rob Murphy all showed up. It was a great call, sun and no wind made it pretty tolerable.  First half was running around the neighborhoods by Highland then loops of Sugarhouse, met Bill the East coach and he joined us for the last few laps.

Good "welcome back to altitude, here's some VO2 max intervals and hills, b#tch" weekend!

Very cold, so I headed to the fieldhouse.  Knocked out 8 there, then back home.

Workout day, third hardish effort in four days and feeling it.Went to the fieldhouse since there's few options available right now.  Did a little jog in the fieldhouse to get sufficiently warmed up, and did plyos then it was into the workout 3 by 2 mile with 800 jog inbetween.  First one was 11:05 (5:30, 5:35) second 11:18 (5:35, 5:43) and 11:22 (5:40, 5:42). Saw about the same drop off between miles one and two, and after finishing the second and third intervals felt like I could barely breathe.  Most likely a side effect of still getting into the swing of altitude again.  Shuffled through the cool down and run home, didn't feel much faster than a walk. I'm happy with the results and will be taking tomorrow eaaasssssyyyyy.

You are an indoor track phenom!

Pretty good holding that together at the end of 4 tougher days.

Easy day at the fieldhouse, I need to get outside tomorrow to mix it up.  Thinking some kind of fartlek workout.  There were some guys running then doing some of the worst push-ups I have ever seen.  Made me fear for their backs.

Total Distance
10.60

So I'm awesome and managed to tweak my knee playing paintball.  Yesterday it was feeling pretty not great so I took the day off, today it was sore for about the first half mile.  Hopefully it was just a strain and will be gone on its own soon.  Got outside today to help too, by staying away from sharp curves.  So I did 4 miles on my normal tempo loop 5:50, 5:34, 5:47, 5:31.  Lost a few seconds on the last mile due to unplowed sidewalks by the capitol.  Was planning on doing it again, but the turrible air swayed my decision to fartlek intervals, knocked ten out before the end.

This is the worst time of the year, really important for training.  But super unhealthy to do it outside.  Looking at the forecast the conditions will be sticking around till at least next Sunday when there may be a storm.  Everyone who got out of town for St. George looks even smarter than usual.  Good luck down there.

Sabres won yesterday, and play again tonight. I love hockey!  Also saw a fellow Buffalo fan at the fieldhouse.

Planning on a Oval workout tomorrow morning should anyone be interested in joining.

Went out and put in another 4.5 miles, got stopped by CBS channel 2 and interviewed about being a crazy runner out in the inversion. So watch that show!

The ONE week that I know there's no chance of me doing a track workout... :-)

Total Distance
12.50

Tried to go to the Oval for a workout, but it was closed for Speedskating all week.  If only the website had highlighted that fact before I drove out to Kearns.  I guess I'll go the Utah Fieldhouse later today.

Yesterday on my run I watched a news truck drive by and thought to myself "it would be cool if they stopped and interviewed me about running during the inversion." Then I saw the truck pull over and the camera guy set up, the reporter asked me to stop and I talked about running outside during this muck.  Then I left and the camera guy ran behind me to get a nice shot of me running away.

Facebook link to the Video

Well I headed down to the fieldhouse to knock out an 8 mile tempo, did 2.5 up with the jog to the FH and another mile on the track. Did a set of plyos then jumped into it.  Definitely not easy, but by the end of the 8th mile felt like I could have made it another mile if needed.  First mile was 5:53, then steady to slightly faster where the last two miles were at 5:45 pace (didn't get exact splits).  For a total of 46:27, felt good about the workout especially in the tight confines of the indoor track and a bit of a cough from all the crap in the air.

Another fieldhouse run, getting very antsy about the storm rolling in tonight.  Hopefully it clears out some of the stuff, and will warm us up a little.  Was considering a double, but after slogging through 8 miles (62 minutes vs. 46:30 yesterday) makes me reconsider especially with all the garbage out there.  I'm starting to develop a cough that I think is inversion related, ugh.

Up to PC to escape the remnants of the inversion with John, Fritz, Bill, Chris (E. High runner) and his sister.  Did a huge loop out from Newpark to downtown PC then jumped on the rail trail and then hit the frontage road that took us back.  I declined to do the extra half mile because of my wonderful cough, and the goal is to get in a long tempo on Tuesday.

The inversion is dead, yay!

Total Distance

Well got up on Monday and felt pretty terrible.  Tuesday was better but the cough was still nagging so I took both days off to try and get back into it.  Finally forced myself out today with the trail shoes on to give some semblance of traction.  Went ok, definitely slow going in parts and the cough was still hanging around.  I think plan for the rest of the week will just be getting in as many miles as I can manage and possibly throwing something hard in on Saturday if I'm on the up and up.

Nice run down through Sugarhouse and Liberty. Solid weekend of running.

Total Distance
14.25

After getting over my inversion depression I drove out to the oval to

get in the dreaded 10 mile tempo.  With a 2 mile warm up and 10 mile

cool down on either side.  As the track is not a nice round number I had

to get mile splits between the 1,600 start line and the finish then

start over at the 1,600 start.  So I got 9 mile splits starting at 5:55

and ending in the high 5:4x's and I believe the overall time was right

around 58:20 for 10 (5:50 pace) and just kept running to make it an even

60 minutes.  Saw the Utah woman's team finishing their practice during

the first half, and some of them even had encouraging words for me.  I'm

happy with the workout and should just be the first of many 10 mile

tempos before Boston.  The air can't get clear soon enough.

12.6 Another workout day! This one was my 4 mile (mostly) downhill tempo course twice, start with a 1 mile climb to Virginia and 11th ave. then start off down into CCC turn around at the gate.  Continue around past the capitol to State and 2nd.  The first loop was (5:50, 5:26, 5:36, 5:22) Miles 1 and three are more honest <50 foot drop for those.  Miles 2 and 4 have the big drop with four falling off a cliff once you pass the capitol.  Then 2.2 mile uphill jog back to the start then run it again (5:58, 5:27, 5:46, 5:23). Managed to keep the fast miles the same while suffered a little on the slow ones.  I believe both these runs are 1 & 2 all time fastest for me which is encouraging after a nice little 10 mile tempo on Tuesday.

4.3 Easy run around the Aves.

Race: Winter Series 10k (6.22 Miles) 00:34:31, Place in age division: 3
Total Distance
13.50

Drove out to Saltair, and it looked like a great day out.  Then after the airport the clouds closed in and by warmup time it was snowing pretty good.  Did threeish miles, the last half with Jake, Collin and James joined in too.  The way back was very snowy so I piled on the clothes for the second part of the race.

The gun went off and a bunch of guys went out at what my watch said was very close to 5 minute pace, so I eased off and ran a 5:24 planning on reeling guys in the second half of the race. Fritz came by me around then after his 7 mile warmup and started catching guys.  The next two miles were pretty uneventful in 5:29 and 5:24.  Once I hit the turn around the wind kicked in and I praised science I wore more clothes than usual.  Then I caught two guys in the next mile in 5:41. And could see Walter and Tomy ahead of me, the next mile I lost some focus and couldn't reel them in, 5:45.  At this point I told myself you have 1.25 miles to catch those two and I started picking it up, caught Walter then set my sights on Tomy.  The sixth mile was in 5:31 and by a half mile left I had caught him then he started kicking around the 6 mile mark.  After 200 meters I dug down and pulled him back in and pushed through the line.  For running alone into the head wind I was very happy with how I caught people and was moving on the guys in front of me.  I felt really good today, and definitely had something left in the tank as evidenced by my big kick.  This week contained almost a marathon worth of work faster than marathon pace and leaves me confident for the upcoming weeks of training.

Then I cooled down about 4 miles with a big group of guys at the end.  Then went to Amiee's for a scrumptious lunch, and I brought the bacon!

4.3 Easy morning run, hoping it will warm up for a workout this afternoon.

11.7 Drove down to Sugarhouse for a tempo workout, two laps warm up then right into the workout, first mile was slow in 5:47 (+59 feet), mile 2 5:36 (-33'),  mile 3 5:38 (1'), mile 4 5:41 (11'), mile 5 5:42 (-10') and mile 6 5:31 (-32') which ends up being 6 miles in 34 minutes.  Hard run, especially Rose Hill.  But once I finished I felt good again within about .5 miles and cooled down 2.9 miles.  On the way home saw Adam running down 13 east so I gave him a honk.

I'm very happy with this workout, it was hard but considering the hills ends up being about the same effort as the 10k on Saturday.  The goal in the next few weeks will to being the 10 mile tempo pace down and lengthen these faster tempos so they become the same workout by Boston.  Less than 9 weeks to go!

Great article on Grantland in response to the PED article by Bill Simmons.  It all comes back to the fundamental question of what is cheating? People have always used whatever they can to their advantage.  Surgery is recognized as being ok, along with altitude tents and Alter-G tredmills.  There needs to be a discussion about what is considered cheating and sufficiently severe punishments established before sport can be cleaned up.

Met up with Fritz and Collin to get in a nice long run in Emigration. Chilly heading up, but once we got into the sun it felt a lot better.  We took it pretty easy heading up, but Fritz and I hammered the last 1.5 up feeling great.  Then we headed back down, taking it pretty easy.  I took a quick break then put in a quick mile to catch back up.  By the time we made it to Ruth's Fritz had started dropping the hammer and I was delighted to go with him.  Back at the car I grabbed a quick gel and some water then went up Wasatch to hammer a four more miles.  The were all under marathon effort, last 7 miles were 6:38, 6:21, 6:11, 5:56 (this took me to the car), 5:58, 5:50, 5:42, 6:09 (big climb back towards the zoo).  Felt great, probably could have kept going but I had to get to Andrea's going away brunch and I didn't want to push it too hard.

This ended up being my highest mileage week since college (minus a 100-100 beers/miles challenge).  Ended the week feeling good.  My hope is to keep the mileage in the 90-100+ range until Taper time with a 22 and 24 miler thrown in there.  With some solid workouts thrown in there 2:35 might be a bit too slow a goal. Here's hoping.

Those are excellent splits on the Wasatch Drive portion of the run. You're training is exactly how I would approach Boston - variety of paces, variety of terrain (hills)... focus more on perceived efforts rather than specific paces, and run hard when you're tired. You're going to be really, really well prepared for this marathon.

14 Workout today and Wednesday to get an extra easy day in before the 15k on Saturday.  The plan was to run down to Sugarhouse and two miles in start the 10 mile tempo (58:30), six in the park and two miles back home with 2 miles cool down.  Went well the splits aren't consistent, but that's to be expected with a hilly course first two were net downhill 5:37, 5:44.  Then the next six in the park were 5:37, 5:51, 5:42, 5:53, 5:43, 5:59.  With the slow miles being net up and fast ones being net down.  Then the last two were 6:03, 6:18 both were about 100 foot climb and felt very hard.  The elevation adjustment thing in Strava puts all the miles at roughly the same effort so I'm pretty happy with this, but think I'm still feeling the weekend. The last two miles were probably a mistake and in the future I'll keep it with the rollers and just do a longer cool down.

The question of where Jon Kotter has been came up on the long run.  I have an answer today, flying by me in Sugarhouse while I'm doing a workout.

I will be celebrating James K. Polk's achievements today. Despite the fact that the State of Utah has declared today Washington and Lincoln Day to avoid support of an unnamed recently elected Executive Branch leader. Manifest Destiny son!

4.5 Easy run around the Aves. Feeling the Tonyburger from lunch, I don't know how the great Dane Rauchenberg does it.

10.5  Everyone's favorite workout 16 by 400.  Limited venues to do it in so I went to the fieldhouse at the U.  My legs were definitely feeling it on the jog down and the first few intervals, but once I got into a groove it went very well. I ran 4 straights and three turns and then about 200m jog between each.  The first one was in 79 then 76 and just kept getting faster.  The middle intervals were in the 70-72 range and the last two were 69 and 68.  With the goofy distance of the track it's hard to tell the exact distance, but it was close enough.  Mostly I focused on form and once I figured out how to run fast again things went well.  It feels good (though it still hurts) to run fast like that again.  I think it's important, even in marathon training, to have a few hard track sessions to remind the body how to move quick.

4.5  Got the new Nike Flyknit trainers so took them out for a jaunt.  Ran into Bill and a few of his East kids.  Felt good, though that hill on Virginia still hurts.

Also got a speedsuit, can't wait to take it out in a race.

It was pretty crazy day for a race.  Not a flake had fallen overnight and weather.com said the snow would hold off till at least 10:30.  But we all know that the weatherman likes to lie to us.  Right at the Saltair exit the snow started coming down, and I got there just in time to see the early star.  Met up with Fritz and "warmed" up 3 miles. Luckily we were both bundled up so only out faces were getting stung with little snowflakes.  When I got back in to put on my tights Jake and Rob Murphy and decided to take their leave of this race as conditions had deteriorated too far for their fragile bodies ;).  I made myself a makeshift face warmer out of one of my arm sleeves and some pins, and threw on my Brook Cascadias to get some traction out there.

Like all the SLCTC races this one went off at exactly 10AM Mountain Time.  The wind had shifted and let up some so it acted as a tailwind going out.  From the Start it was BJ, Fritz, Chris (East High all-star) and me.  With about 1" of snow on the ground it ended up being pretty easy going.  The first few miles we stayed together then BJ started gaping up and Fritz went after him.  BJ then lost his glasses around 4 miles and stopped to pick them up being him back to us.  At the turnaround we were still close together, but then the wind started hitting us, and I went from being too hot to just about right (except my face).  The snow would melt on my face and obscure my vision, so I had to run with one eye closed on the way back.  BJ caught back up to Fritz then I caught Fritz too and ended up with about a 15" gap between us the whole way back.  My legs felt heavy the first two miles back, but started coming back the last miles of the race.  But there was nothing to be done, I ended up second in about 56:30, I didn't stop my watch immediately as I had no manual dexterity and the shirt was frozen around the watch.  Unofficially I am the winner of the Winter Series with the lowest overall time, due to a rough day for Fritz after a hard week of PT for him.

I am disappointed by the weather today, this was supposed to be a good indicator of my fitness going into the last 7 weeks of Boston training and help set goals for the next few weeks.  I know I'm in good shape, but how good?  Right now my goals are at minimum sub 2:35, and best case sub-2:31 good for the American Development corral at Chicago.  The next race is Canyonlands in three weeks, and should tell me a lot about where I am.  This is the grinding part of the training cycle.

My plan for next week is to back off the miles a little bit and give myself a few extra days to recover from the 15k then hit a big long run on Saturday.  Back to back 106 mile weeks have felt surprisingly good, though the easy days have been as slow as I can manage.

Splits: 5:53, 5:43. 5:42, 5:46, 5:58 (turnaround at 4.65), 6:32, 6:31, 6:15, 6:14, ~2:00 (.321).

Meet tomorrow at Highland at 9AM for an easy 10!

You're really fit, dude. Workouts have been rock solid, mileage has been great. You're gonna kill it at Canyonlands and that will give you a really good indication of how high to shoot at Boston.

I think sub 1:11 gets you into the fast corral at Chicago too, which I have no doubts you can do this spring/summer.

4.5 Easy shakeout run, waiting till warmer temps to workout today.

13.6 Workout day, needed a big day and finally got one.  Ran 2.25 miles until I crossed Sunnyside then started down 1500e to Sugarhouse.  Got stopped for a few seconds at the light then the next 5.25 miles around Sugarhouse for 7 total.  FAST for once, finally got the CR on Sugarhouse loop in Strava in 7:35.  Hold on to your hats for these splits 5:36, 5:25, 5:29, 5:30, 5:26, 5:36, 5:28.  After composing myself and being able to breathe again I began the 4.25 mile jog home.  Once I got back I sat down on the front steps and didn't move for a while.  Then I ate a cupcake when I got inside, it was great.

I needed a day like this, this week was geared towards mental and physical recovery before the last 6 weeks to Boston.  I had been dreading this run for a while and nervous about my fitness after disappointing winter series races (though pollution and weather can account for some of that).  This gives me a lot of confidence going into Canyonlands half in two weeks to shoot for a PR and just hit some great long runs and workouts in the next few weeks.

After some digging I found my last really hard workout (7 mile tempo) from 2 years ago in Sugarhouse when I think I was in 71-72 half shape.  The three laps from today were faster than all of those laps. Booyah!

Ah the Sunday long run, staple of any training regimen.  I met Scott and Fritz at the Mt. American Credit Union with a light drizzle in the air.  Then we set out up Wasatch, still feeling Thursday a little bit.  We talked a little bit about all the important topics, religion, drugs, porn. Helped the miles stream by.  The trail at Parley's canyon was still quite a mess so we got slowed down there, but we got into a stretch of low 6's in there.  At least Scott and I were a little off today so once we added on a little bit at the end top hit 20 we called it quits.  Today was one of those days where it was just good to get the run in, we still manages 6:37 pace feeling tired and less than ideal weather.  Great start to the week, picked up some McDonald's on the way home.  It just tastes so good at the end of a long run.

Right hamstring was not feeling great yesterday, stretching and stick made it more tolerable today.  No pain but still tight, I guess? It just felt off, I'll keep on it and hopefully have it all worked out soon.  Still time for a workout, with a planned tempo during the long run on Saturday I decided to do my 4 mile tempo then the hill workout of doom today, and planning on 5 or 6 by mile on Thursday.

I have put together that one mile uphill is not an ideal warmup and will be adjusting that in the future.  My times were around the norm for the 4 mile tempo, legs felt a bit stale but got going pretty quickly.  5:54, 5:29, 5:31, 5:32 then a little over a mile easy to the start point for the hills.  Starting from I St. and S. Temple did 7 intervals climbing 900 feet in about 2.5 miles including the short rest breaks. It felt very hard, but I always remember Rule Number Zero and push through.  Then jog from the top of Terrace Hills back to the house.

11.5 Workout in Liberty Park, two miles down then 6 by mile at HM pace with 400 jug rest then run home.  After last Thursday burning me out for the better part of a week I decided to embrace more of the fast but not hard mantra.  So I settled on miles around 5:30, on the 'crete as the grass is still thawing out.  Didn't look at my watch for the first one and ended up running 5:49 but treated it as more of a warmup.  Next five were 5:31, 5:30, 5:27, 5:29, 5:33.  I was tired but not blasted after the last one, the park climbs from 13th S to 9th S, not really noticeable when running easy but during workouts it's tough.

On my last interval two woman with 3 dogs between them managed to occupy the entire path.  I said "come on" as I negotiated my way through them and they were like "so, whatever".  After passing through I may have called them something that rhymes with witches, the pace was too crisp to remember clearly.

4.4 Nice run in the Aves.

Met Fritz at Shopko at 7:20 to drive down and meet the Utah Co. guys. Got a call from Scott saying it was windy down there, but barely a flutter in Sugarhouse.  We drove down to Reed's house where it was crazy windy.  So the decision was made to trek up to Riverton to do the run on the Jordan River Trail.  Mike, Scott, Reed, Dan, Fritz and I started out south and did 10 out and back to the cars in 70 minutes.

Then after fueling up we headed north for the workout portion of the run, five miles into the wind at 6:00 pace then whatever we could muster coming back.  Fritz and Scott took off and Mike and I worked our way back up to them to get some of the wind break.  Fritz and Scott did a lion's share of the work while Mike and I helped out when we could.  Ended up running 5 miles out in 28:18 (5:42, 5:44, 5:38, 5:36, 5:38). Took a short break then headed back, my legs were extra sore the first mile and Fritz and Scott ended putting a few seconds on me in the three miles out hard.  My splits were 5:22, 5:25, 5:25 then we eased back and while it felt like 7+ minute pace ended up running 6:11, Mike caught back up with about 1/2 mile to go and we started picking the pace back up and the last mile was 5:45 with the last half a lot closer to 5:00 pace. So the last five was run in 28:08. Great workout and couldn't have done it without everyone there, not time to have some pizza and beer and watch some basketball.

Good race, quads felt tired second half. Fell apart a bit outside of the canyon. More to come once I get home. PR baby!

Got up early and took care of business then ran over to the busses, got stopped by Fritz, Scott and Brandon as they were finishing getting ready.  We got bussed up to the start and then proceeded to hang out for an hour and a half.  Wind started blowing a little more by the start of the race.  Chatted with a bunch of people at the start line and then the gun went off.  Fell off a cliff at the start, but made sure to stay back from the fastest guys.  Then after a few miles started working my past a few people.  I was gaining on Scott until Fritz came back to him and they took off right around mile 6.  So I sat in sixth place till the finish, my quads started getting fatigued again as usual, but throwing water on them seemed to help for about a half mile.  The hill of the race came right around 9.5 which was very painful.  After that it was pretty boring, went under the road then ran into town.  That seemed to take forever, those last miles outside of the canyon were tough.  I tried to pick it up going into the chute to make sure I got under 73, but the legs just didn't have much left and ended up running 73 flat.

I'm excited to PR and see some of the results of this training cycle.  But I felt like I could have gone faster if my quads didn't poop out.  But on the plus side I ran a half marathon faster than I ever have at altitude on a rolling course with a headwind.  So probably could have been sub 71 back at sea level.

Splits: 5:13, 5:32, 5:28, 5:23, 5:34, 5:31, 5:37, 5:39, 5:38, 5:43, 5:41, :48.

You have to lean at the finish line when your chip is on your bib. Haha I remember you telling me that at the finish. I would've been in the 1:07 club at Mt. Nebo if they would've gave me 1:07:99 instead of 1:08:00. Great race!

Really solid race. Based on the hilliness and altitude, Daniels puts this at 70: low on flat at sea level. It seems likely that you'll have a sub-2:30 in you at Boston if you can keep the training up!

I think breaking up the workout like that is very smart. That way, if there are any remnants of the 1/2 causing trouble, you'll know during the recovery period and won't have run a really long effort damaging anything further.

Are you gonna run the Leopards 5K or do a longer run this Saturday? If its the latter, I'm back in the game now and will join you guys.

I have to admit I was getting a little worried about how I was recovering after the half.  My legs only really started coming back to me the second half of yesterday's run.  And I hadn't run a mile under 7:20 since the race.  So I made sure to be ready for the run today, and ready to ease off if it got to be too much.

We had a nice crew ready to go this morning, Mike and Scott up for Utah county.  Fritz, Jake and I from the normal crew.  Rob Murphy, Adam H, and Jon Kotter rolling up as it was time to head out.  The first part of the run was 11ish warmup down to Hollah!-day and back.  Only a few miles were over 7 minute pace, but either my legs were numb from the cold or they were feeling good.  We got back to the cars and everyone took care of their business then we headed into Sugarhouse to start the fun part of the run.

It was about 6 laps to get us up to 20 over the rolling hills.  Jon took off like a bat out of hell not telling us how far he planned to go (3 miles) and Fritz went with him.  I stayed back with Jake, Scott and Mike for the first lap.  I did the first three miles hard (5:21, 5:34, 5:24) then eased back planning to do one one off for the rest of the run.  My easy miles ended up being a little slower than MP with my hard miles a little under so it made for a nice change of pace workout (6:08, 5:28, 5:57, 5:34, 5:59).  It was pretty surprising how good the "easy" miles felt.  And how my legs responded overall.  I hit mile 8 right at the top of Rose Hill and finished with Jake.  Then we all got rounded up and did an easy lap.  Still managed 7 flat pace, which felt like a shuffle after the last 8 miles.  Ended up with 21 in the books at 6:28 AP, great run after the not too great week I had running wise.

Also, probably one of the sickest plays I have ever seen. While it may have ruined my bracket it was a spectacular game with FGCU upsetting Georgetown.  FGCU has existed for 11 years, had a D1 team for 6 and are only in the second year of postseason eligibility.  Pretty unreal, those white boys can ball!

Boston Packet came in the mail today!

Met up with Collin, Fritz and Oliver (2nd at Canyonlands) at Highland to put in some miles this morning.  Fritz wanted to do at least 18, so I sucked it up and grabbed some chomp blocks.  Collin turned around right around 5 and the three of us carried on.  Got to the mouth of BCC and headed up Wasatch back to Highland.  I felt surprisingly good, and the fact that the second half wasn't at tempo effort helped a lot.  I put in over 40 miles in two days, in two runs.  While finishing up climbing the hill at the I-80 underpass Fritz and I both discussed if we were running 140 a week this would be a typical day (though likely broken up).  It's good to know I can handle this stuff as I have plans for 110-120 mile weeks this summer.

I dropped Oliver off after his longest run of the year and went to Barnes & Noble to pick up some books for my flight on Friday.  Looking in the running section there were about 10 copies of Born to Run with the covers facing the customer and one copy of Running with the Buffaloes so you can only see the spine, because people are stupid.  So I put Running with the Buffaloes in front of the Born to Run books to help support one of the best running books ever written.

Feeling surprisingly good after two long runs, today was just nice and easy with an option for a second loop of Sugarhouse if I was feeling up to it.  Tomorrow is a planned workout so only the one run today.

My training advice today is how to run/race hills.  The key to beating someone on a hill isn't running really hard up the hill, it's recovering quickly and throwing in a surge after you crest the hill.  It's pretty impossible to respond to immediately and helps open a nice gap that discourages people from moving back up to you.

11.6  Last lonesome workout in SLC for a while.  With two long runs this past weekend and another planned for Friday I wanted to do put in a good effort without killing myself.  So I decided on 4 by 1.5 miles on the dirt path in Liberty.  The dirt path is a little slower, but much easier on the legs.  I jogged 2 miles to the park then got right into with 800 meter rest in between.  My first mile for the four loops were 8:39 (5:48,2:51), 8:25 (5:40, 2:45), 8:35 (5:34, 3:01), 8:16 (5:28, 2:48), the third interval was a little long, effort felt the same.  I felt like I was working pretty hard without excessively beating myself up too much.  Which is where I want to be three weeks out from Boston.

Nice interview with Ryan Hall talking about mileage progression. I think it's important to restrict mileage in High School to foster long term development, running too much just puts a damper on long term development and causes early burn out.  Seventy miles would be the max, especially when the longest race run is 5k.  Even in college the first two years should be spent carefully bringing along someone to that magical 100mpw total.  That kind of mileage is really only necessary to race 10k+.

6.1 Run around City Creek, then immediately dove into some candy because I'm starving.

Two eventful occurrences in the run, around 3 miles encountered a large group of bros and brosephinas. They were impressed by my speed, and implored me to go faster, a little over six was fast enough. Then about a mile out from our place I was quickly catching up a slow runner who avoided three dudes. This race is still kind of a blur and it's taken me a week to really want to write anything about it.  The start was crazy, I haven't been in a field this competitive ever.  Only college cross country races have felt similar.  The crowds were amazing, Wellesley was unreal. My brother and his friends were at the last turn.  The first half I just tried to keep a constant effort and not go to crazy because I knew people would come flying back to me the second half.  Once I got to Wellesley I flexed and slapped hands until my arm got tired, I started speeding up at this point for obvious reasons and just felt great, like I haven't just run a half marathon in 1:16:30 which was exactly on pace.

So I started moving, I flew up the first three newton hills, but my quad issues were intruding even as I passed people like they were standing still.  Even on Heartbreak my legs still felt ok and the pace wasn't too off.  But the last five miles where I wanted to fly were just some of the most painful running I have ever done.  Every stride was painful and I really wanted to stop, but in the end it would have just hurt the same but for a longer period.  I was dousing my legs in water every aid station, and started Gatorade a mile 23 (should have switched earlier).  Both those things seemed to help a little, but it was just a grind it out phase then.  Even sort of blowing up I and feeling like I was standing still I was keeping it pretty well together, caught a few guys and got caught myself.  My legs are still roughed up, owing mostly I think to different muscles getting recruited the last few miles that aren't used to doing what I was asking them to do.

I was on pace for my goal, and if my legs hadn't gone I would have been able to probably gain a minute or two and end up somewhere around 2:31:xx and get into the top 100.  But live and learn, I got a few good pointers from my college coach the next day about some strength training and good ideas for a few workouts to try to simulate a marathon load as closely as possible.

After the race I saw Scott, and found out I was catching up to him.  Once Brandon finished and I said congrats to both of them I made the stumble back to my brother's place about 1/4 mile from the finish line.  After helping my up the stairs and replenishing myself, we were about ready to head out when we heard the two bangs.  About 10 minutes later we found out what happened on Twitter and we hunkered down there for the rest of the day and a lot of his friends checked in back at his place before heading back home.  I was diligent about answering all my texts to make sure people didn't worry about me, and I was very relieved to know everyone I knew was safe.

Hey bro - that was a heck of a race you ran today. 2:35 is a rock solid time on that course. I was so stoked as I was tracking the splits and you were holding it together... and got that 2:35. Despite the rest of day's events, I hope you are happy about what you did. Hard work all winter paid off in a nice way for you today. Spend some quality time with your family and friends now.

Not the best day for a relay race, but you just gotta make do.Ran with Fernando Ramirez, Karl Siebach and Carlos Trujillo (2:14 guy(!)).  We started in the last time and it looked like our competition would be the Olympic Nordic ski team.  I ran the 1 (2.9), 5 (3.8), and 9 (6) legs which got progressively longer.  Had to pick up the third leg since we were down a runner.  Altitude took a bit to get used to, but the last two legs went great.  Feeling a little more confident about running UV half in a few weeks.
